Lexa Labs launches a Bahasa-first language model built for regional banks
The Singapore startup says local-language accuracy, not model size, is what lenders in Indonesia and Malaysia asked for.

Lexa Labs, based in Singapore, is the latest example of how ai in Southeast Asia is maturing. The $4.5 million deal puts the company among the better-funded players in its segment.
Lexa Labs trained the model on licensed banking documents and call-centre transcripts in Bahasa Indonesia and Malay, and says it runs on a single server rack inside a bank’s own data centre.
Why it matters
Investors across Asia have become more selective since 2023, backing companies that can show paying customers and a clear path to profit. Founders in Southeast Asia told ASN that the bar for a new round now includes at least a year of steady revenue growth.
We built for the customer who was already paying, not the one we hoped would show up.
The company said it will use the next year to deepen its existing markets before expanding further.
The numbers
- Market: Southeast Asia
- Headquarters: Singapore

What comes next
Competitors are watching closely, and at least two rivals are said to be in talks to raise fresh capital. ASN will keep tracking Lexa Labs and the wider ai market in Southeast Asia.
